Here’s a suggested itinerary for a two-week trip that covers some of the best highlights on both the North and South Islands

TRIP ITINERARY

Day 1-3: Auckland

  • Day 1: Arrive in Auckland. Explore the Auckland Waterfront, visit the Sky Tower for panoramic views, and relax at one of the city’s beaches like Mission Bay.
  • Day 2: Take a day trip to Waiheke Island. Enjoy wine tasting, explore local beaches, and take in the scenic views.
  • Day 3: Visit the Auckland War Memorial Museum and Auckland Domain. Consider a day trip to the Waitakere Ranges for hiking and views of the black sand beaches.

Day 4-5: Rotorua

  • Day 4: Drive to Rotorua (about 3 hours). Explore the geothermal parks like Wai-O-Tapu or Te Puia, and relax in the hot springs. 
  • Day 5: Visit the Maori village of Tamaki or Mitai, and enjoy a cultural performance and traditional feast. You might also want to try the Skyline Gondola and Luge.

Day 6-7: Wellington

  • Day 6: Drive or take a bus to Wellington (about 6 hours). Explore the Te Papa Museum, the Botanic Gardens, and Cuba Street.
  • Day 7: Take a day trip to the Wairarapa region or explore the nearby Kapiti Coast.

Day 8-9: Nelson

  • Day 8: Take a ferry from Wellington to Picton, then drive to Nelson (about 2 hours). Explore the local galleries, beaches, and perhaps take a wine tour in the nearby regions.
  • Day 9: Visit Abel Tasman National Park for kayaking, hiking, or relaxing on golden beaches.

Day 10-11: Queenstown

  • Day 10: Fly from Nelson to Queenstown. Explore the adventure capital of New Zealand with activities like bungee jumping, skydiving, or a scenic cruise on Lake Wakatipu.
  • Day 11: Take a day trip to Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound for breathtaking fjord scenery. Alternatively, explore nearby Glenorchy or Arrowtown.

Day 12-13: Franz Josef or Fox Glacier

  • Day 12: Drive to the West Coast (about 4.5 hours from Queenstown). Explore Franz Josef or Fox Glacier. Consider a glacier hike or a scenic helicopter flight.
  • Day 13: Enjoy another day in the glacier region or visit nearby Lake Matheson for stunning reflections of the Southern Alps.

Day 14: Christchurch

  • Day 14: Drive to Christchurch (about 4 hours from Franz Josef). Explore the city’s Re Container Mall, the Botanic Gardens, and the Canterbury Museum. Depending on your flight schedule, you may need to stay overnight or catch a flight out.
